Muck and lots of it. That’s what we found when we drained our backyard koi pond for some spring cleaning. We also found a family of ducks, a cat, and a turtle (ornamental of course), that have taken a dive over the years. The fish hung out in large tubs for most of the day, while Bruce our Pond Guy and his two helpers scooped out 50+ buckets of muck and hosed down and vacuumed the liner.
Day 2. My beloved fish are back home, swimming down low. It’s taking a while to fill up our pond since we don’t want to dry out our well, which is probably why it’s never been drained before.

Slowly but surely the water level is rising, but until then be sure and notice the clean sides of the pond. Plus you can see some of the new babies that have appeared after the winter!
Tomorrow I’m heading out to get some new aquatic plants, Painting by the Pond 2017 promises to be nice and clear with our 40-50 fish by our side.
Wow you have sooooo many beautiful fish!
Happy Mother’s Day.
Love you,
Cathy
Thanks Cathy, as a mother to two sons, two dogs, and lots of swimming fish, I greatly appreciate your good wishes. Off to take a swim myself, though not in the pond! Happy Day to you as well!
Nanci,
I am just in from redoing our pump, filter, baskets for our 2 fish to hide under and treatment for algae. I need one more pool plant and some lettuce or something. We still have only the 2 fantails so I think we lucked out and have 2 or the same sex. It’s better for us since you might be tired of our populating your pond each year. Ha! Seriously, you get blessings daily for having played foster mom in our moments of need. We are having to redo our whole fence this year so not open for Day in Old New Castle. High hopes for next year.
It looks like we’re going to have to get some water delivered for our fine fan tailed friends! Looking forward to getting some new plants, but not until after the water is delivered! Enjoy your aquatic adventures. and of course, Happy Mother’s Day!
It will be SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
I hope yours doesn’t have the same horrendous reeking, gagging stench that our puddle/pond did whenever I cleaned it out. Seriously yuck. But worth it!
I don’t dare put one in here because everything dries out so quickly in the sun and wind. Wish I could!
Come see!
No smell, but still green…hopefully with all the water plants I got for Mother’s Day will help clear the water! Wish you could come see too!
Oh, man, this brought back memories. My dad still does this every so often, but I no longer live close enough to witness the mayhem that occurs. Thanks for the memories!
and after doing it last week, we now know why we waited 9 years to do it! But I do love my pond as I bet you dad does too, Alyson! Thanks for visiting.
PS: Great title!!
