Drawing yesterday in my studio Garbiñe, our visiting guest from Basque Country of Spain watched me thoughtfully. Interested in language, she speaks three fluently, is proficient in others and will study philology in college this year.
Taking her various places in the area with family and friends introduces her to the area, invites us to discover our environs with new eyes, and helps us find common ground. We covered Brandywine River Museum over the weekend, Winterthur Museum and Gardens on Tuesday, and yesterday, Nate and I showed Garbiñe a bit of downtown Newark, DE and the University of Delaware Campus.
While verbal communication between Garbiñe and our family is easy, as I followed the charcoal lines on my paper with water, medium and gesso I thought about the power of art, music, and food to connect with others on a deeper level.
How wonderful that you can have a universal experience right in your back yard and that you have shared once again how important art, music and yes, food brings people together on a level that often without verbal language can cross cultural boundaries and unite people of the world.
and you Laurette are having that experience far from your backyard but making friends, building relationships and forming connections with your work!
You and your family are amazing people. The warmth and welcoming manner to all who come your way is to be celebrated.
Thank you Bobbi- we are fortunate to live in an age where we can connect virtually and in person across the world. Hope you can meet Garbiñe!
